Create a Picture Frame with GIMP

Hi there!

In the first place I wish you have happy new year, full of creative moments and I hope you can achieve your goals :)

Ok, so let’s start with our first tutorial of the year! How to add a nice and easy frame to your pictures.

Step 1:

Open a picture of yours, for the purpose of this tutorial a certificate of any course you have received is good.
Picture frame - Step 1

Step 2:

To add the border is easy, just apply the border filter (Filters > Decor > Add Border…) and using the following settings:
Picture frame - Step 2

I’ve used a large value for the X and Y size, because my certificate is pretty large size too. Also notice the border color can be any tint/shade of sienna/brown. After applying the filter, you will have something like this:
Picture frame - Step 2b

Step 3:

Add a new transparent layer and drag the “pine” pattern from the Patterns dialog.
Picture Frame - Step 3

Step 4:

Select the border layer and go to Filters > Map > Bump Map… and apply the following settings:
Picture frame - Step 4

Notice we have selected the pine player as our bump map! Bump Map makes “bumps” in the active layer (e.g. our border layer), as if another layer (called the bump map, e.g. the pine layer) was pushing up from underneath.

After this step, hide the pine layer and keep the border layer selected.

Step 5:

Apply a subtle shadow using Filters > Light and Shadow > Drop Shadow… and using the following settings:
Picture frame - Step 5

And there you have it! Remember to export your final work using File > Export…

I hope you like it! and see ya soon :)

God bless,

Create a Gold Medal with GIMP

Ok, here I go with my first tutorial!

Before you start, you will need the following files: Medal files

First go to GIMP and select a new image (the default size 640×400 px is Ok). Now go to File > Open as Layers and select the teacher picture (FIGURE 1).

Medal Tutorial Step 1

FIGURE 1  Add the teacher picture.

Next the background… add a new layer and drag the “Film grain” pattern and drop it on the layer. Reduce the brightness of the background using Colors > Brightness/Contrast.

Now select the Ellipse tool and draw a circle (220 px) around the teacher picture (remember to press the Shift key after starting your selection to draw a perfect circle). Then select the Blend tool (gradient) and choose the Golden gradient from the gradients dialog. Drag diagonally over the selection from bottom left to top right to make the gradient. (FIGURE 2)

Medal tutorial step 2

FIGURE 2  Use the Gradient tool to make the medal’s base.

Keep the selection active, and add a new layer above the medal’s base. Shrink the selection by 16 px (Select > Shrink). Again select the gradient tool and apply the golden gradient to the selection. Go back to the medal’s base layer and go to Color > Curves to darken it a little bit (FIGURE 3).

Medal tutorial step 3

FIGURE 3  Don’t ask me about the teacher’s engraving… we’ll be there in a moment!

Select the top medal layer and go to Filters > Map > Bump Map. Apply the settings in the picture below: (FIGURE 4)

Medal tutorial step 4

FIGURE 4  Applying the bump map, notice we’ve selected the teacher picture as the bump map.

Note: The bump map makes “bumps” in the active layer, as if another layer (called the bump map) was pushing up from underneath.

Hide the teacher picture layer.

For the final touches, I added a support piece for the medal’s necklace and the actual necklace is made using the Free Select tool (Lasso tool) and some straight lines with the paintbrush (FIGURE 5). You can also add a shadow using Filters > Light and Shadow > Drop Shadow.

Medal tutorial step 5

And that’s it! Let’s see our final result:
