Create a Picture Frame with GIMP

Hi there!

In the first place I wish you have happy new year, full of creative moments and I hope you can achieve your goals :)

Ok, so let’s start with our first tutorial of the year! How to add a nice and easy frame to your pictures.

Step 1:

Open a picture of yours, for the purpose of this tutorial a certificate of any course you have received is good.
Picture frame - Step 1

Step 2:

To add the border is easy, just apply the border filter (Filters > Decor > Add Border…) and using the following settings:
Picture frame - Step 2

I’ve used a large value for the X and Y size, because my certificate is pretty large size too. Also notice the border color can be any tint/shade of sienna/brown. After applying the filter, you will have something like this:
Picture frame - Step 2b

Step 3:

Add a new transparent layer and drag the “pine” pattern from the Patterns dialog.
Picture Frame - Step 3

Step 4:

Select the border layer and go to Filters > Map > Bump Map… and apply the following settings:
Picture frame - Step 4

Notice we have selected the pine player as our bump map! Bump Map makes “bumps” in the active layer (e.g. our border layer), as if another layer (called the bump map, e.g. the pine layer) was pushing up from underneath.

After this step, hide the pine layer and keep the border layer selected.

Step 5:

Apply a subtle shadow using Filters > Light and Shadow > Drop Shadow… and using the following settings:
Picture frame - Step 5

And there you have it! Remember to export your final work using File > Export…

I hope you like it! and see ya soon :)

God bless,
